Indications for Generic Zyrtec
Zyrtec or cetirizine is an antihistamine which counters the effects the histamine released in the body causes. Histamine could produce several symptoms including itching, sneezing, watery eyes and a runny nose.
Zyrtec is used in the prevention or treatment of the symptoms caused by hay fever as well as in the treatment of the symptoms of colds and allergies. It is also used in the treatment of the itching and swelling that is caused by hives or chronic urticaria. It can also be used for purposes which are not listed in this guide.
Important Information about Generic Zyrtec
Zyrtec should not be taken if you have had an allergic reaction to cetirizine. Before taking Zyrtec, make sure that you would be informing your doctor of any medical conditions that you may have as well as any drugs or medications that you are already taking.
Zyrtec belongs to the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm an unborn child. It would still be important, though, to inform your doctor about any plans you have of becoming pregnant in the near future. Also inform your doctor if you are already pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Dosage and Administration of Generic Zyrtec
Zyrtec or cetirizine should be taken as it is prescribed by your doctor or as directed on the label. It should never be taken in larger amounts or for an extended period of time other than what has been recommended by your doctor.
Zyrtec could be taken with or without food.
Zyrtec chewable tablets should be chewed or broken down before being swallowed. The liquid form of Zyrtec should be measured with the use of a special dose-measuring device and not just a regular spoon. If you do not have one, see if your pharmacist can give you one.
If you miss a dose, take it as you remember but if your next dose is almost due, you can just wait until then to take Zyrtec and just skip the missed dose altogether. Never take an extra dose just to make up for the missed one.
If you feel that you have taken too much of Zyrtec, seek medical help immediately. Some of the signs of Zyrtec overdose would include a feeling of restlessness or nervousness and being drowsy.
Possible Side Effects of Generic Zyrtec
Some of the less serious side effects which may possibly be caused by Zyrtec would include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, a dry mouth, a cough, sore throat, nausea, constipation and headache. These symptoms are usually only temporary and go away on their own. However, if they worsen, inform your doctor as soon as you can.
An allergic reaction to Zyrtec may be suspected if you experience: hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling in your throat, face, lips or tongue. Seek emergency medical assistance if you have any of these. Also get medical help as soon as possible if you feel any of these serious symptoms: a fast or a pounding heartbeat; weakness or tremors; sleep problems; hyperactivity or restlessness; vision problems; confusion; and a decrease in urination frequency.
