Indications for Generic Zelnorm

Zelnorm or tegaserod works through increasing the action of the chemical known as serotonin in the intestines. This, in turn, speeds up the movement of the stools through the bowels.

Zelnorm is generally prescribed for the treatment of severe and chronic IBS or irritable bowel syndrome in women who have a main bowel problem of constipation. It can also be used for the treatment of chronic constipation in patients who are below 55 years of age.

Zelnorm has not been studied be effective for the irritable bowel syndrome or IBS in men.

Zelnorm can also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Important Information about Generic Zelnorm

Zelnorm or tegaserod should not be used by people who have diarrhea as their main bowel problem.

You should not use Zelnorm if you have an allergy to tegaserod. Inform your doctor of all drugs that you are taking to make sure that they would not be interacting with Zelnorm.

Make sure to tell your doctor of any special medical conditions that you are being treated for like a history of a heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled angina, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglycerides, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach or intestinal disorders, intestinal blockage, anxiety, diabetes and depression. If you have any of these, your dose may have to be adjusted.

You should not use Zelnorm if you: are older than 55 years of age; smoke; are overweight; or have a history of having suicidal actions or thoughts.

If you symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, call your doctor right away.

Zelnorm belongs to the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that the drug is not expected to harm a developing baby. Nonetheless, it is best to inform your doctor if you are pregnant, are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Zelnorm

Zelnorm or tegaserod should only be used as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Never take it in a larger amount or for a longer time than what has been recommended for you. Always follow the dosing instructions on your prescription label.

Each dose of Zelnorm should be taken on an empty stomach but with plenty of water.

Zelnorm is typically taken twice daily. Always follow the specific instructions of your doctor.

It could take up to two weeks of taking Zelnorm before your symptoms improve. Make sure to keep using this medication as your doctor has prescribed. If your symptoms do nor improve after six weeks of treatment, consult your doctor.

Do not stop taking Zelnorm suddenly as doing so could make your symptoms return in one or two weeks.

If you miss your dose, skip it and just take the next scheduled one. Never take additional medicine to make up for one you missed.

If you overdose on Zelnorm, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Some symptoms of an overdose would include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
