Indications for Generic Sporanox
Sporanox or itraconazole is indicated for the treatment of three kinds of serious fungal infections: histoplasmosis, blastomycosis and aspergillosis. Histomplasmosis is an infection which could affect the lungs, blood and heart. Blastomycosis is an infection which could affect the lungs, skin and bones. Aspergillosis is an infection which could affect the kidneys, lungs and other organs. Sporanox can also be prescribed for the treatment of onychomycosis, a condition that infects the fingernails and the toenails, as well as for the treatment of fungal infections in patients who have weakened immune systems due to AIDS and other autoimmune diseases.
Aside from the capsule form, Sporanox is also available as an oral solution and is used for the treatment of candidiasis of the throat, mouth and esophagus.
Important Information about Generic Sporanox
Sporanox or itraconazole should only be taken as long your doctor has prescribed. In order to completely cure infections, it may take up to three months of treatment. Do not stop sooner than the period that has your doctor has prescribed as it could cause the infection to return.
You should take Sporanox if you are sensitive or allergic to itraconazole or similar anti-fungal drugs like ketaconazole. Inform your doctor of any drug reactions which you experience.
Patients with cardiac problems like congestive heart failure should not use Sporanox to treat fungal nail infections. Sporanox is also not recommended for patients who have a low white blood cell count or those with cystic fibrosis.
Make sure to inform your doctor if you are or are trying to become pregnant as the effects of Sporanox on the unborn child have not been established. Also inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding as Sporanox can be passed in breast milk.
Sporanox can interact with the following drugs so make sure to inform your doctor if you are taking any of these: acid-blocking drugs like cimetidine; alprazolam; atorvastatin; blood-thinning drugs like warfarin; buspirone; busulfan; calcium channel blockers like nifedipine; carbamazepine; cilostazol; diazepam; and disopyramide. Make sure that you would be informing your doctor of any drug or medication that you are taking to make sure that it would not interact with Sporanox.
Dosage and Administration of Generic Sporanox
Sporanox must only be taken as prescribed. In order to be sure that the capsules have been properly absorbed, Sporanox must be taken after a full meal. On the other hand, the oral solution must be taken without food. The oral solution should be swished in the mouth for a couple of seconds before it is swallowed. Remember not to take any antacids an hour before taking Sporanox or two hours after taking Sporanox.
If you miss a dose, you could just take it as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, you could just skip the missed dose and take the next one. Never double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
Sporanox or itraconazole should be stored at room temperature. The capsules should be protected from excess light, heat and moisture. The oral solution should also not be frozen.
Possible Side Effects of Generic Sporanox
Some of the possible side effects of Sporanox or itraconazole could include anxiety, diarrhea, bursitis, fatigue, headache, fever, gas, high blood pressure, injury, muscle pain, indigestion, nasal and sinus inflammation, pain, rash, nausea, respiratory infection, vomiting, swelling caused by water retention and urinary infection. Some of the other side effects that have been experienced with the oral solution of Sporanox include back pain, blood in the urine, chest pain, breathing difficulty, dehydration, cough, difficulty swallowing, hot flushes, hemorrhoids, impaired speech, insomnia, inflamed mouth, pneumonia, sweating, shivering, vision problems and weight loss.
Patients who are being treated for onychomycosis could also experience rash, stomach and intestinal disorders, headaches, light-headedness after standing up, muscle pain, low blood pressure and vertigo.
Side effects should just be temporary; if they are experienced for an extended period of time or worsen, make sure to contact your doctor.
