Indications for Generic Singulair

Singulair or montelukast is a type of leukotriene inhibitor. Leukotrienes would be the chemicals that are released by the body when you breathe in an allergen like pollen.

Singulair is generally prescribed for the prevention of astha attacks in both children and adults. It can also be used for the prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction or the narrowing of lung air passages; but not when you are already using Singulair for the prevention of allergy and asthma symptoms. Important Information about Generic Singulair

Although Singulair or montelukast can be used by children as young as 12 months old, this drug should never be administered to any child without the advice of a doctor.

Singulair should not be used for the treatment of an asthma attack which has already started as it would not be able to work that fast o reverse the symptoms. You should only use a fast-acting inhalation medication for the treatment of an asthma attack. Ask your doctor if the asthma medication you are using is not working as well.

If you are already taking Singulair for the prevention of the symptoms of asthma or allergies, then you should not use it for the treatment of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

Singulair should not be used if you have an allergy to montelukast. Inform your doctor of any drug allergies that you have, especially to aspirin. Tell your doctor of other medications that you are taking which could interact with Singulair such as phenobarbital or Luminal and rifampin or Rifadin.

The chewable tablet of Singulair could have phenylalanine. If you have PKU or phenylketonuria, consult your doctor before taking this form of Singulair.

Singulair belongs to the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm a developing baby. However, make it a point to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning to be pregnant or are breastfeeding before taking Singulair.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Singulair

Singulair or montelukast should only be taken as it has been prescribed. Never take it in a larger dosage or for a longer period of time other than what has been recommended by your doctor.

Singulair is typically taken once a day, usually in the evening for the prevention of the symptoms of asthma and other allergies. If you are taking it for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, you may be directed to take one dose two hours before exercising, with the next dose taken aster at least 24 hours. Always follow the instructions of your doctor.

The regular tablet should be swallowed whole and with plenty of water. If you are taking the chewable tablet, you would need to chew it completely before swallowing. If you are taking the oral granule form, you could place the granules in the mouth and then swallowed or mixed with some applesauce or other soft food before swallowing. Never save the mixture for future use.

Asthma is generally treated with a combination of various drugs. In order to properly treat your condition, make sure that you are also taking all the other medications which have been prescribed for you.

If you miss a dose. Just make sure that you would be taking it once you remember. However, if the next dose is almost up, just skip the dose you missed and then take the next regularly scheduled one. Never double your dosage to make up for a dose you missed.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Singulair

Some of the side effects which can be caused by Singulair would include headache, stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, tired feeling, tooth pain, stuffy nose, fever, cough, sore throat, hoarseness and mild rash. These are usually temporary but if they do not go away on their own or if they worsen or if you start experiencing an allergic reaction or more serious side effects, consult your doctor or get emergency medical assistance right away.
