Protonix or pantoprazole belongs to a group of drugs which are known as proton pump inhibitors. It works through decreasing the amount of acid which is produced in the stomach.

There are some conditions which need to be treated with Protonix for a longer time period. Long-term use of this drug has been connected with the development with stomach cancer in animals; however, it is not known whether Protonix has the same effects in humans. Discuss your individual risk of developing stomach cancer from this medication.

Long-term use of Protonix could also make it more difficult for the body to absorb vitamin B12, which could result in a deficiency of the vitamin. Make sure to follow the instructions of your doctor if you would be needing to take some supplements to avoid having a vitamin B12 deficiency.

You should not take Protonix if you have an allergy to pantoprazole. Also inform your doctor if you are taking any drugs like ampicillin, atazanavir, blood thinners, clopidogrel, iron and ketoconazole to make sure that they would not be interacting with Protonix.

Protonix belongs to FDA pregnancy category B, which means that the drug is not expected to harm a developing baby. Make sure that you would be informing your doctor if you are pregnant, are planning to become pregnant or are nursing.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Protonix

Protonix or pantoprazole should only be taken as it has been prescribed for you. Never take it in a larger dose or for a longer duration than recommended. Follow the exact dosing instructions on your prescription label.

Protonix can be taken with or without meals.

Do not crush, chew, or break a delayed-release (enteric-coated) tablet. Swallow the pill whole. The enteric-coated pill has a special coating to protect your stomach. Breaking the pill could damage this coating, causing too much of the drug to be released at one time.

If you are using the delayed-release tablet, do not chew, crush or break it as doing so could release too much of the drug into the body at once. Instead, swallow it whole.

If you are using the oral granules, you can mix it with some apple juice or applesauce only to make swallowing easier. Do not mix it with any other type of soft food or liquid. Protonix granules can also be administered with some apple juice using a nasogastric tube or through an oral syringe.

If you miss a dose, make sure that you would be taking it as soon as you remember. However, if the next dose is almost up, you could just skip the dose that you missed and then take the next scheduled one. Never take double doses to make up for one that you missed.

If you overdose on Protonix, make sure to seek emergency medical attention.
