Indications for Generic Prevacid

Prevacid or lansoprazole works through decreasing the amount of acids which are produced in the stomach.

If you are also taking sucralfate, do not take it at the same time you would be taking Prevacid . This is because sucralfate could make it more difficult for the body to absorb Prevacid. Make sure to wait 30 minutes or more after taking Prevacid before taking sucralfate.

You should take Prevacid for the entire duration that your doctor has recommended, even if your symptoms have already started to get better.

Prevacid belongs to the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm a developing baby. However, it is still advisable to inform your doctor if you are pregnant, are trying to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Prevacid should not be administered to a child who is younger than a year old.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Prevacid

Prevacid or lansoprazole should only be taken as your doctor has prescribed. Never take a larger dose or take the medication for a longer time than what has been recommended. Follow the exact dosing instruction on your prescription label.

Each dose of Prevacid should be taken before meals and with plenty of water.

If you are using the delayed-release capsule, do not chew, crush or break it as doing so could release too much of the drug at one time. Instead, swallow the pill whole. If you are having a bit of difficulty swallowing it whole, you could ask your doctor if you could open the capsule and then sprinkle the medicine into a spoon of applesauce, pudding, cottage cheese, yogurt or strained pears. The mixture should then be swallowed right away without chewing. You could also try dissolving the medicine from a capsule in two ounces of apple juice, tomato juice or orange juice. You could then stir the mixture and drink everything right away.

If you are using the oral granules, dissolve them in two tablespoons of water. Stir the mixture and then drink everything right away.

If you are using the orally disintegrating tablet, put in your mouth and wait for it to dissolve completely without chewing. Do not swallow it whole. The orally disintegrating tablet can also be administered through a nasogastric tube or through an oral syringe.

It is important to regularly take Prevacid for the entire duration recommended by your doctor in order to get the most benefit. Make sure to refill your prescription even before it completely runs out.

If you miss a dose, take it as you remember. However, if the next dose is almost up, you could just skip the dose that you missed and then take the next scheduled one. Never take additional medicine to make up for a missed dose.
