Imitrex or sumatriptan works by narrowing the brain’s blood vessels. It also reduces the bodily substances which could trigger nausea, headaches, light and sound sensitivity and other migraine symptoms.
Imitrex is generally prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches. It is not, however, used for the prevention of headaches or the reduction of the number of migraine attacks.

Make sure that you would not be using Imitrex within 24 hours of taking almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, or an ergot medication like methysergide. You should also not use Imitrex if you have taken an MAOI or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor within the past 14 days.
If you have certain medical conditions such as ischemic bowel disease, a history of heart disease, sever high blood pressure, severe liver disease, angina, circulation problems, stroke and heart attack, you might be advised by your doctor to not take Imitrex. Make sure to inform your doctor of all medical conditions that you have especially if you smoke or drink or if you have diabetes, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease and if you are overweight or are older than 40 years of age.
Imitrex or sumatriptan belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that the drug’s effects on a developing baby are unknown. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, are planning to get pregnant or are nursing.
Imitrex should not be administered to children below 18 years of age or to individuals older than 65 years of age.
Dosage and Administration of Generic Imitrex
Imitrex or sumatriptan should only be used as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Never use it in a larger dosage or for a longer time than what has been recommended for you.
Avoid overusing migraine headache medications as doing so could actually worsen your headaches. Always follow the prescription label.
As soon as you notice the symptoms of a migraine headache or attack, use Imitrex right away.
Your first dose might have to be administered by your doctor in a clinic or hospital to make sure that you would not be experiencing any serious side effects.
Each Imitrex tablet should be swallowed whole and should be taken with plenty of water. Never crush, break or chew the tablet.
If you are using the Imitrex nasal spray, read the patient instructions first. Follow the directions carefully. If you have questions or concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Before using the spray, blow your nose so that your nasal passages are clean. Avoid sneezing or blowing your nose right after spraying.
After taking an Imitrex tablet, you need to wait at least two hours before you take another tablet. You should not take more than 200 milligrams of Imitrex tablets in a period of 24 hours.
After using the Imitrex nasal spray, you need to wait at least two hours before you spray another dose. You should not use more than 40 milligrams of Imitrex nasal spray doses in a period of 24 hours.
If you experience more than four headaches in a month, contact your doctor.
Because Imitrex is generally taken on an as-needed basis, you would not be on a dosing schedule. If you symptoms do not improve even after using Imitrex, call your doctor.
If you used too much of Imitrex, seek medical help right away. Some overdose symptoms would be tremors or shaking, breathing problems, skin redness, blue-colored fingernails or lips, vision problems, weakness, watery eyes or mouth, seizures and lack of coordination.
