Fosamax or alendronate belongs to a group of drugs which are known as bisphosphonates. Fosamax works through altering the bone formation and breakdown cycle in the body. This effectively slows the process of bone loss and increases bone mass, preventing bone fractures.

You should not take Fosamax if you have an allergy to alendronate. Inform your doctor if you are also taking other drugs such as aspirin, other NSAIDs, prescriptions medications and vitamins or supplements to make sure that they would not be interacting with Fosamax.

If you are unable to sit up or stand for 30 minutes, you should not take Fosamax tablets. This is because Fosamax may cause serious esophagus or stomach problems. you would have to stay upright for 30 minutes or more after taking the medication.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Fosamax

If you are taking Fosamax tablets once a day and you forget to take it in first thing in the morning, you should not take later on in the day. You could just wait for the following morning to take a dose. Never take more than a tablet a day.

If you are taking Fosamax tablets once a week and you forgot to take it on the scheduled day, you could just take it the first thing in the morning of the following day and then you could take the next dose on the scheduled day of the following week. Never take more than a tablet a day.

If you overdose on Fosamax, seek emergency medical help right away. Some symptoms of an overdose would include numbness or tingling, seizures, diarrhea, muscle cramps, stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, irritability and an unusual behavior.
