Indications for Generic Aygestin

Aygestin or norethindrone acetate contains the hormone progesterone.

Aygestin is essentially prescribed for the restoration of menstruation in women who have amenorrhea or who are no longer having menstrual cycles. It can also be used for the treatment of a condition called endometriosis. It can also be prescribed to control the unusually heavy bleeding of the uterus which is caused by hormonal imbalance. Note, however, that Aygestin is not prescribed to control the bleeding which is caused by cancer or fibroids.

Aygestin can also be prescribed for other conditions or purposes which have been determined by your physician.

Important Information about Generic Aygestin

Aygestin or norethindrone acetate can possibly increase the risk of having blood clots, which could lead to stroke, breathing problems, phlebitis and vision problems. If you start experiencing the symptoms of a clotting disorder such as pain with swelling, warmth or redness in a leg vein, loss of vision, coughing or shortness of breath, migraine or weakness, stop using Aygestin and contact or see your doctor right away.

You should not take Aygestin if you have an allergy to norethindrone acetate.

You should not take Aygestin if you are pregnant or if you have had an incomplete miscarriage as well as if you have a history of a stroke or a blood clotting disorder. Inform your doctor if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, breast cancer or severe liver disease. If you have any of these, you might be advised against taking Aygestin. Make sure to tell your doctor if you have other conditions such as epilepsy, heart or kidney disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, migraine and asthma – your dose may have to be adjusted.

To make sure that you do not have cancer or any other medical condition, your doctor may require you to undergo a complete physical examination.

Inform your doctor of any other drugs you are taking such as aminoglutethimide, carbamazepine, phenytoin, Phenobarbital, rifampin and rifabutin to make sure that they would not be interacting with Aygestin.

Aygestin should not be used to test for pregnancy, as it could cause harm to a developing baby. If you are breastfeeding, inform your doctor as well.

If you have a history of serious depression, make sure to inform your doctor as soon as you start experiencing the symptoms of a relapse. You may be advised to stop taking Aygestin.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Aygestin

Aygestin or norethindrone acetate should only be taken as directed by your physician. Never take it in a larger amount or for a longer time than what has been prescribed for you.

If you miss a dose, make sure that you would be taking it as you remember. However, if your next dose is almost up, you could just skip the one that you missed and then just go back to your regular schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.

If you suspect an overdose on Aygestin, make sure to get emergency medical help right away.

Aygestin or norethindrone acetate could cause some common side effects such as: acne, blood clots in the arteries, eyes, lungs or veins; breast tenderness or enlargement; breakthrough menstrual bleeding; increase in blood pressure; bulging eyes; double vision; depression; cervical changes or secretions; appetite changes; hives; headache; change in menstrual flow; optic nerve inflammation; insomnia; migraine; menstrual spotting; mood changes; itchy or non-itchy rash; skin discoloration; swelling; vision loss; yellowing of the eyes or skin; and amenorrhea.
