Indications for Generic Atarax

Atarax or hydroxyzine hydrochloride is an antihistamine. Antihistamines generally work through decreasing the effect of a histamine. A histamine is a chemical released by the body, narrowing the lung’s air passages which could contribute to swelling, itching and secretions from the eyes, nose and throat.

Atarax is essentially used for: the relief of tension and anxiety; the treatment of anxiety resulting from a physical illness, in combination with other drugs; and the relief of itching caused by allergic reactions. It can also be used as a sedative that can be administered before and after general anesthesia.

Important Information about Generic Atarax

Atarax or hydroxyzine hydrochloride should never be used for more than four months and your doctor should periodically re-assess your prescription.

Atarax must not be taken during early pregnancy as it can have an effect to the developing fetus. If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding a baby, then make sure that you inform your doctor first.

Atarax should not be taken if you are sensitive to some of the components of Atarax or if you have had an allergy to it in the past.

Atarax could also increase the effects of certain drugs which slow down the activity of the body’s central nervous system. The dosage of any narcotics, analgesics and barbiturates that you are taking should be reduced if you are also taking Atarax.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Atarax

You should take Atarax or hyrdroxyzine hyrdrochloride exactly as your doctor has prescribed. If you miss a dose, you should take it once you remember but if your next dose is already up, just skip the missed dose and then just go back to the regular dosing schedule. Never take two doses at once.

Avoid taking alcohol if you are taking Atarax as it could increase the effects of alcohol.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Atarax

Some of the common side effects which can be experienced while taking Atarax or hydroxyzine hydrochloride would include dry mouth, tremors, twitches and convulsions. The most common would be drowsiness, which is why driving and operating heavy machinery should be avoided. These side effects may disappear if the dosage is reduced so make sure that you inform your doctor if a dosage reduction is possible. Also, if these side effects are experienced for an extended period of time or if they increase in intensity, inform your doctor right away.
